Do not work (and probably made no sense during the first watch either, I was just too busy with it being New) is that Merlin goes out of his way several times to save Uther using magic, in ways that vilifies magic, and the contradiction and how that is a good way to prime yourself for self-loathing is never pointed out
and also that at no point magic gets treated like any other craft that people could practice, and nobody points out to Arthur that he literally could just allow magic and then separately make laws about how magic may not be used to commit treason, aid Camelot's enemies or harm its citizens and they'd serve the exact same purpose while bringing in magical allies to help with the constant magical attacks on his kingdom.
It's stated over and over that magic can only be fought with magic and nobody ever points out that by outlawing magic, Uther and Arthur leave their kingdom more vulnerable than the kingdoms without such restrictions.
Jesus in orbit I'm gonna have a headache about this for the longest time, I know that if the problem was solved there would be no plot but this is just the worst kind of dumb plotting.
