Dreamblogging! I had one of those weirdass video game dreams where I knew it was "fake" but couldn't entirely pick up on it being a dream so my brain just assumed it was a highly immersive video game.

(Content warning for gun violence and body horror.)

I don't remember much about the plot other than Evil Corporation Uses Evil White Goop To Experiment On Humans, and the game was mostly spent examining bodies mutilated and mutated by the Evil White Goop, and eventually fighting monsters (people who looked like they were half-melted and then calcified by it) created from the White Goop by the Evil Corporation. Presumably it was an experiment gone horribly wrong because one of the PCs actually worked for the company (and the other one was just an investigator brought in to pacify the police).

Towards the end, there was an incredibly disturbing section where they flood the "safe" office complex you've been going in and out of, trading info with some of their scientists, with corrosive gas, leading the player character of that section to wander around the sealed-off labs filled with dead and dying scientist before seeing her love interest get shot and then getting shot herself. You actually hop from the love interests POV when the gas releases to the PC, and then have to try to make your way to where he is only for him to die by the Corporate Death Squad just as you reach him.

At the end of that segment, the player character changes, but because I was pissed off that I couldn't warn the new PC of what was coming (b/c otherwise she would have walked past her dead friends with no comment), I got the scene to "stay" in the previous PCs viewpoint for the first part, as if the camera had been locked to her. After that, I either reset the game without watching the ending (probably b/c I was getting increasinly frustrated at the Mass Effect 3 levels of being railroaded into an unwinnable situation) or the whole thing started over with me sharing viewpoint with the Evil White Goop That Eats People for the first part in the sewers (where I got to eat a security guard. Yum.) and also sequence breaking the first exploration bit by going straight for the ladder to street level.

There was one bit of inspiration in the dream, though -- there were various White Goop Mods that some of the PCs could use, and the one that was picked out for me was "Empty", which bothered me a lot at first b/c the others had cool names like "Burst", "Rage" and "Dragon", and then halfway through one of the White Goop Zombie missions, I realised that a) White Goop Mods didn't work on White Goop Monsters and b) "Empty" must have been a mistranslation of "Vacuum", b/c the skill let me zip out of the way of enemy fire, like The Hand's space-erasing dash, so that was pretty cool. I also think not having any mods in is what allowed the PC of that section to just walk out (still leaving the previous PC on the floor!! After she was shot, but still very clearly alive!! I know that carrying her down the stairs filled with Goop Monsters would have not worked but who leaves their friend like that!!!) and reach the ending escape sequence.

But, seriously, I can't overstate how scary the bit where gas was released into this very High-Tech lab, causing half the staff to just keel over keening and crying, and the other half to seal doors, cower with gas masks on, and eventually get shot by the bad guys' cleanup squad, actually was. Up until then it had been a pretty standard shooty game format, but suddenly characters were getting mutilated and also actually dying the way someone dies when they get shot, and I kept thinkin "wow, this is not a level of realism I expected from a game about Evil White Goop, good job developers" :'DD
