Yessssss, Elementary is my baby and I love it so much--especially how considerate the series is about exploring Sherlock's story (not just history) as an addict and not treating it as a moral failure. And Lucy Liu is just such a great actress and Watson is written in a way that compliments Holmes really well and really realistically.

I'm surprised you didn't read a lot of Shakespeare, though, since it feels like a kind of universal constant/rite of passage.

I mean, maybe for Anglophones. I studied literature in Finnish, it wasn't until we got to Enlightenment and literature beyond it that we started looking at translated works from other frames of thought. Translation invariably changes the nature of a text.

I sometimes feel like it might do the world good if they'd also read "Seitsemän veljestä" and "Tuntematon sotilas". Maybe we'd be in little less of a crush to elevate the English canon if texts from minority languages where platformed and analysed more.

Hmmm, you're right. The only real times we discussed translation studies/the art of translation in my English (ie literature) classes was when we read classical texts like Beowulf or the Bible.

As somebody who has read a fair amount of Spanish/Latin American literature in both Spanish and translated English, I agree that it would be great for just everybody in general to platform texts from other languages. With Spanish in particular, there's the entire genre of magical realism which is native to it, not to mention all the important political thought that began with latinx writers.
