Today I discovered that one of the reasons the Micro-B USB design became a stardard first for data and then later for charging is because Nokia was still enough of a market force to push for it, explicitly so they wouldn't have to go the proprietary cable route the way Apple had. (The charger standardisation came later, through EU legislation)
