I'm discovering New Feelings about the "haha gay and homophobic" type of joke all of a sudden.

First -- it's almost always made about, like, literally the straightest fucking characters? Like Ed Sheeran levels of Pure Heterosexual, complete absence of queer vibes, just pure wishful thinking and/or wanting The Favourite to be problematic in a more favourable way.

Second, when it is being made of plausibly queer men, I keep detecting a vibe of... gender in it, like, it's always very masc men, always very butch men, said in a tone that goes "of course masculinity and queerness cannot intersect", always to the tune of "manly (derogatory)". I should be delighted in this, because I am a known connoisseur of Toxic Masculinity, especially when it's queer, but it always ends up feeling like I'm being asked to bond over disgust.

Third -- as I have already implied, fucking nobody says it about bigoted women. Women's queerness somehow makes them immune to being bigoted dipshits and having internalised homophobia. Which is boring. Give me my twice-divorced homophobic and gay power lesbian.
