Is pointing out when a fandom post that could be read very differently with the knowledge that it was made by someone with "pedo/abuse/incest supporter DNI" in their about getting reblogged as a "lol, relatable" post by people who definitely aren't fanpol worth it?

Is, like... taking joy from people in fandom away from them worth it when the source of that joy is someone who I feel like should be deplatformed?

Am I going crazy for being able to spot when a Funny Relatable fandom post was definitely made by someone who thinks the people reblogging it range from "horrible person" to "actual abuser"?

Am I overthinking this???

I'm less upset about staunchly anti-censorship and anti-purity people reblogging those posts than I am of the way the OP who put all those dogwhistles there in the first place getting notes and feeling validated. We talk about deplatforming as a way to protect people from bad rhetoric and potential abusers but I think an underrated aspect to it is the way it denies awful people validation. Social cornering does work on those who are doing bad things out of a genuine sense of responsibility towards others, and their actions having the opposite effect might just work to make them reconsider their positions.

It's the whole... "when being tolerant gets you friends, being tolerant becomes more desireable and easier". I just don't like belligerent people being popular b/c that both lets them spread and normalise their belligerence and because I don't think rewarding being an asshole should be acceptable in any sitation.

Oooh, yeah, I've seen this happen a couple of times, and it's very "??? how did you not spot it? what is going on?" every time. (With the caveat that almost certainly something similar has gone *fwip* right over my head at some point.)

It's so hard b/c fandom wank objectively doesn't matter and people have reasons for public pettiness other than "finding dissenters to target for public harassment". But every time I see one of my staunchly pro-ship friends reblog something where I don't even have to check if the comment came from fanpol I kinda just make a strangled noise and force myself to move on.

Overthinking, no. Potentially tilting at windmills, yes.

A lot of the dogwhistles are so obvious that the people not noticing them are the ones with the actual issue. Spreading around the nature of the dogwhistle might work over time, but pointing out the specific instance of reblogging probably won't do anything but upset people.

Yep, I definitely realised after a moment of this that I was. Trainwrecking, lmao. I have a bad habit of reading anti discourse even though it stresses the fuck out of me and therefore I'm extremely Hip On Their Lingo and aware of their URLs... Like I mentioned in a self-reply, my problem isn't even really their stupid jokes getting spread around b/c they are perfectly innocent without the context of thoughtcrime, I'm just annoyed at so many of these people being popular to the point where even blocking and muting and filtering them doesn't always guarantee I can forget their existence. Such is Tumblr. I'm seriously considering doing a follow purge like the last time I started trainwrecking on this.
