TFA Optimus is such a poor judge of character
Tuesday, 5 February 2019 11:09I reject the idea that I'd ever like Sentinel Prime, but I do kind of find his and Optimus' relationship interesting because Optimus' willingness to "give into" Sentinel says interesting things about him.
I get the sense that Optimus might actually be too close to really see what kind of a power hungry jackass Sentinel is -- like he's been around him long enough to know that Sentinel is all talk, essentially, and then during the show when Sentinel finally starts moving away from being all talk, Optimus is soft on him because at the back of his mind, he still thinks Sentinel "doesn't really mean it". It's essentially fundamental attribution error.
The other way this "I expected no less from you (yet I somehow don't hold you accountable for it)" makes sense is if Optimus actually does hold the same principles as Sentinel does (because Sentinel is infuriatingly principled, complete egotist or not), and sees Sentinel as the successful one because he's capable of doing the things that "feel bad" that are still "right" in the framework they're using. In that sense, his insistence that on Earth, they're on his turf and need to play by his rules makes more sense -- needing the change in context to be able to square away the... pretty damn obvious mental dissonance he has over those principles.
And the reality, as usual, is probably somewhere in the middle.
But either way, Sentinel Prime is interesting, if only through how his presence doesn't just act as contrast to what a much better leader and person Optimus is, but also because casts light on some of Optimus' flaws, and I feel like I need to do something with that.
