I have most certainly made this exact joke before but while I agree that sandpapering away all the flaws a character has is bad, I think putting them through a rotary tumbler to remove burrs and dull the edges of their writing slightly and to achieve a more consistent surface finish on their characterisation is beneficial and, indeed, great fun.

They come out looking cared-for, all of the rough tooling marks removed, pleasant to handle :D
EDIT: AND!! If for some thematic or aesthetic reason you want to retain some tooling marks, those surfaces can be masked beforehand :3c Only wiggle the parts that need it. Same as sandblasting.
