I have most certainly made this exact joke before but while I agree that sandpapering away all the flaws a character has is bad, I think putting them through a rotary tumbler to remove burrs and dull the edges of their writing slightly and to achieve a more consistent surface finish on their characterisation is beneficial and, indeed, great fun.

(the parts inside our big toroid tumblers actually move quite slowly, sort of swimming around in the ceramic grindstones. it looks very soothing and restful, like a full-body massage XD)

They come out looking cared-for, all of the rough tooling marks removed, pleasant to handle :D
EDIT: AND!! If for some thematic or aesthetic reason you want to retain some tooling marks, those surfaces can be masked beforehand :3c Only wiggle the parts that need it. Same as sandblasting.
