In the absence of actual musical spoons...
Friday, 14 August 2020 12:14About five years back my relatives went on a tour of China and one of them brought me a xun/huen, a clay vessel flute, because back then I was still playing the flute and if the conversation turned to music you could count on me bringing up a flautist or a flute piece within five minutes.
I finally managed to find a partial fingering chart that let me start learning songs! Problem is I learned the flute by playing chromatic series' instead of scales, so my ability to sightread is highly dependent on... basically muscle memory to take me from one note to another, and if I only know how to play a single scale with an instrument, I'm absolutely garbage at playing anything from memory with it.
Worse yet the xun is probably tuned to have D as its base tone, but b/c I had to feel out the major scale, I can't wrap my head around what notes I'm actually playing with it. On top of that every note has multiple fingerings, and playing certain notes in sequence is much easier if you use the alternative fingering instead of the simple one, and if you want to then be in tune, you gotta. Like. Nudge the flute a little to put it back in tune. I'm so glad I don't actually hear out of tune notes unless they're in a chord or a melody.
It's a nice instrument, though. It's got a very soft, cozy sound. I've been trying to play Zelda tunes and themes from Civilization with it to get my hands used to moving correctly.
