Yeah, there's a lot going on there, and I don't want to entirely discount the real-world issues around the movie. I avoided the pre-movie press as much as possible because I wanted to go into it without knowing what the writers/director/producers thought they did (because with Star Wars, there's an unfortunate tendency for the movie they thought they made to not be the actual movie that people saw), and I do wonder how many of the overhyped fan expectations were coming from that rather than just fandom drama.

It does seem related to the recent wave of needing headcanons to be CANON, though--there seems to be an unsettling shift toward "fanon ideas only count if they become canon", which gets wrapped up in ship wars and people insisting that diverse headcanons count as representation. (Some of that was always there, especially with ship wars, but I'm seeing it a LOT more now.) I don't know where it's coming from, but I feel like the ability to say "welp, that wasn't what I wanted and now I'm sad, HEY I'M GONNA WRITE A FIX-IT UNIVERSE WHO WANTS TO JOIN ME" would be a lot easier on everyone's emotions than cussing out the creators on twitter.

I also kind of wonder if being into Transformers has more or less made me immune to Bad Movie Problems--because while I did see the plot issues with TROS, I've also seen a couple of Hot Takes (TM) that made me go "wait, that's clearly not what they were implying" and then once I stopped to think about it, I realized I'd just kind of automatically filled in the logical missing scene and taken the implications as canon. Of course there's SUPPOSED to be an emotional reunion/forgiveness moment between Leia and Ben, it's just that they couldn't film it for tragic real-life reasons, so they heavily implied it instead and it's canon enough. Which is...probably giving the movie more credit than it deserves, but at the same time, I had fun watching this movie and the person delivering the Hot Take in question didn't, so I'm inclined to say my method works :D
